Ο συρτός είναι ένας παραδοσιακός ελληνικός χορός που η προέλευσή του τον ανάγει στην αρχαία Ελλάδα. Το όνομα του χορού προέρχεται από την αρχαιοελληνική λέξη “σύρω” (τον χορό)
Ο χορός μνημονεύεται στην Επιγραφή του Επαμεινώνδα (στα μέσα του 1ου αι. μ.Χ.), που βρέθηκε στη Βοιωτία και αναφέρει: “Τὰς δὲ πατρίους πομπὰς μεγάλας καὶ τὴν τῶν συρτῶν πάτριον ὄρχησιν θεοσεβῶς ἐπετέλεσεν”, δηλαδή “με θεοσέβεια τέλεσε τις μεγάλες εθνικές πομπές και την εθνική όρχηση του συρτού”.
Ο Συρτός χορεύεται σήμερα σε όλη την Ελλάδα και είναι διαδεδομένος σε πολλές χώρες.

English Translation:

The syrtos is a traditional Greek dance that traces its origins to ancient Greece. The name of the dance comes from the ancient Greek word “syrō” (to dance).
The dance is mentioned in the Epaminondas Inscription (mid-1st century AD), found in Boeotia and states: “He performed the great national processions and the national dance of the syrtos with godly devotion”, that is, “he performed the great national processions and the national dance of the syrtos with godly devotion”.
The syrtos is danced today throughout Greece and is widespread in many countries.
