Σούστα είναι το όνομα ενός πανάρχαιου χορού της Κρήτης, που χορεύεται επίσης σε όλη την Ελλάδα και μερικές φορές και στα Βαλκάνια. Η προέλευση του σούστας προέρχεται από τον αρχαίο χορό Πυρρίχιο, πολεμικό χορό της Κρήτης. Η μουσική της σούστας γενικά παίζεται με μια λύρα (κρητική ή ποντιακή), βιολί, λαούτο, μαντολίνο και ασκομανδούρα. Oι μουσικές μελωδίες, που συνοδεύουν τη σούστα διατηρούν τον Πυρρίχιο ζωηρό χαρακτήρα αφού έχει τις ρίζες της κι αυτή στον αρχαιότερο πολεμικό χορό της Κρήτης.

Το μουσικό μέτρο του χορού, είναι 2/4 και τα βήματά του 6. Άνδρες και γυναίκες, με λαβή από τις παλάμες στο ύψος των ώμων, αφού χορέψουν έναν κύκλο χωρίζονται σε δύο ομάδες (ανδρών και γυναικών), η μία απέναντι από την άλλη, φροντίζοντας να βρεθούν αντικριστά οι χορευτές που θα αποτελέσουν ζευγάρι. Στη σούστα εντοπίζονται αρκετά στοιχεία ερωτισμού, ενώ ο χορός εκτελείται από τα ζευγάρια ανδρών και γυναικών που χορεύουν αντίθετα. Μιαν άλλη μορφή είναι, όταν όλοι οι χορευτές σε μια σειρά ακολουθούν τον πρώτο χορευτή ο οποίος κινείται σε πολύπλοκα σχήματα.

Σχεδόν κάθε νησί του Αιγαίου έχει κι από έναν χορό σούστας.

English Translation:

Sousta is the name of an ancient dance of Crete, which is also dancing throughout Greece and sometimes also in the Balkans. The origins of the Susta comes from the ancient dance of Pyrrhicus, the war dance of Crete. The music of the Susta is generally played with a lyre (Cretan or Pontian), violin, lute, mandolin and asconduction. The musical melodies accompanying the Soust keep Pyrrhicus lively, having its roots in the most ancient war dance of Crete.
